How to Visit Anuradhapura Sacred City, Sri Lanka

The Sacred City of Anuradhapura is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important cultural destinations in Sri Lanka. Often referred to as the cradle of Buddhism on the island, it was the capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom for over a thousand years, from the 4th century BC to the 11th century AD. It remains a deeply spiritual place to this day.

Anuradhapura is a modern day city, located right next to a sprawling archaeological park, which is the ancient city. You can explore it either on your own (ideally on a bicycle) or as part of a guided tour on tuk tuk (there’s a lot of distance to cover). As you get closer, you’ll see gleaming white stupas emerge from the trees. Their domes rise like beacons above the landscape and are visible from miles around. These impressive structures, along with ancient temples, monasteries and sacred fig trees, give Anuradhapura an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the country.

Why Visit Anuradhapura Sacred City?

Anuradhapura Sacred City is an archaeological wonder. It shows just how advanced ancient Sri Lankan civilisation really was. The site covers a vast parkland and includes several stunning temples and ruins. Each one has its own unique story and atmosphere. You’ll see soaring stupas, crumbling monasteries and sacred trees that are thousands of years old.

Anuradhapura still holds deep cultural, religious and historical importance. Pilgrims come from all over Sri Lanka to worship here. Unlike more touristy spots, it feels peaceful and authentic. You can see a real glimpse into the heart of Sri Lankan culture but without the crowds.

What is there to see in Anuradhapura Sacred City?

You can visit the following sites in Anuradhapura Sacred City. This list covers the main attractions, but there’s loads to see:

  • Ruwanwelisaya Stupa: One of the tallest ancient monuments in the world.
  • Mirisawetiya stupa: The first of the great stupas to be built at Anuradhapura.
  • Isurumuniya Rajamaha Viharaya: Known for its stone carvings of the Isurumuniya Lovers.
  • Thuparamaya: The first Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. Built in the shape of a bell.
  • Jetavanaramaya Dagaba: When this stupa was built it was the third-tallest structure in the wold after two of the pyramids of Giza.
  • Lovamahapaya: The remains of a building that used to be known as the Brazen Palace due to its bronze tiled roof.
  • Abhayagiri Dagoba: The ruin of an ancient monastery.
  • Kuttam Pokuna: Twin ponds, an example of ancient Sinhalese hydrological engineering.
  • Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi: An ancient fig tree (the oldest authenticated tree on the planet). One of the holiest sites in Sri Lanka as this fig tree is said to be grown from a cutting of the tree under which Buddha attained Enlightenment.

It can be quite overwhelming exploring everything by yourself as it’s a large site and there’s a lot of history to unpack. If you’d like someone to explain everything to you, consider booking a Private City Day Tour in Anuradhapura. You’ll also get the bonus of having someone to take photos for you!

What Else Will I See at Anuradhapura Sacred City?

Beyond its ancient ruins and sacred stupas, the Anuradhapura archaeological site is a sprawling parkland that feels as much like a nature reserve as it does a historical wonder. As you explore the vast grounds (by foot, bike, or tuk-tuk) don’t be surprised if you’re joined by some curious locals of the four-legged (or winged) variety.

I saw hundreds of monkeys swinging through the trees and lounging on temple steps, completely unfazed by the visitors. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers, with plenty of colourful and exotic-looking birds flitting between the ruins and perching on ancient walls. You might spot peacocks, kingfishers, or even eagles circling above the stupas.

There’s so much wildlife in Anuradhapura that the sacred city has a special mention in my Where to See Wildlife in Sri Lanka post. Anuradhapura is also very close to Wilpattu National Park where you can spot leopards. It’s possible to book a tour to see both Anuradhapura and Wilpattu National Park together as a day trip from Sigiriya: Wilpattu Jeep Safari and Anuradhapura Day Tour From Sigiriya.

Do I Need a Ticket to Enter Anuradhapura Sacred City?

Although you can access some parts of the park without a ticket, you’ll need to purchase a ticket to see the main sights in Anuradhapura Sacred City. When I visited in January 2025, tickets were priced at LKR 9,030 (USD 30) per adult. The entrance fee for children was half the adult price.

How to Get Around Anuradhapura Sacred City?

The best way to get around Anuradhapura Sacred City is to hire a bicycle and cycle around the archaeological park. This gives you complete freedom to visit as many of the sites as you want at your own pace, and in whatever order you choose. It is possible to walk around the site, but the stupas are quite spread out so you’d be covering quite a large distance. Alternatively you can get a tuk tuk (either hire your own or get one with a driver for the day). If you’d like to learn the details of what you’re seeing, I can recommend getting a guide to show you around, as I felt pretty clueless about what I was looking at exploring it by myself. If I go again I’d opt for the guided tour on tuk tuk.

What Should I Wear to Visit Anuradhapura Sacred City?

Most of the stupas are still in use today as Buddhist temples, so you need to dress modestly in the actual temple areas. Legs need to be covered to below the knee. Make sure that your shoulders are covered or that you have something that you can put over them when you go into the temple areas. You’ll need to keep removing your shoes so I recommend sandals that are easy to take off (but that are also fine for cycling). The weather can be changeable to bring a light waterproof.

There’s plenty of accommodation in the modern day town of Anuradhapura, which is located right next to the ancient archaeological park. Many accommodation providers will also offer bicycle hire. My hostel was USD 7 for 2 nights (but it was super basic!) and bike hire was LKR 1000 (USD 3). Alternatively you can stay in another town and visit Anuradhapura as a day trip.

How do I Get to Anuradhapura?

You can get to Anuradhapura either by train or by bus. There are regular direct trains from the capital city Colombo. You can check timetables on the Sri Lanka Railways website. There’s also a bus station right in the centre of Anuradhapura. Travelling by bus in Sri Lanka is cheap and easy, and in my experience locals are always happy to point you in the right direction. It is also possible to visit Anuradhapura as part of a day trip from other parts of Sri Lanka, such as Dambulla, Sigiriya or Kandy.

Where Next? How to Get from Anuradhapura to Sigiriya

After visiting Anuradhapura I made my way to Sigiriya. This was fairly easy (and cheap!) by bus. I first took the number 75 bus to Habarana for LKR 270, then changed bus to Inamaluwa for LKR 150 and then finally caught the bus to Sigiriya from there for LKR 80. It’s also possible to travel via Dambulla instead.

There’s a huge amount to see in this part of Sri Lanka, so consider a private tour such as Dambulla, Sigiriya and Pidurandala Day Tour with a verified tour guide.

Where Next? How to Get from Anuradhapura to Yapahuwa Rock Fortress

If you’re interested in ancient wonders like Anuradhapura, then venture even further off the beaten path to Yapahuwa Rock Fortress. Tucked away in the jungle, this dramatic stone citadel feels like something out of Tomb Raider. Often overlooked by mainstream itineraries, it remains one of Sri Lanka’s hidden historical gems. Check out my full guide: How to Visit Yapahuwa Rock Fortress, Sri Lanka (Public Transport).

If you’re travelling by public transport, head to Anuradhapura bus station and ask for the next bus to Maho Junction. I recommend booking a place to stay in Maho Junction (I stayed at Walawwa Eco Lodge, which I highly recommend), it makes a great base and your accommodation can usually help arrange both a pickup from the bus and transport to Yapahuwa itself.

🇱🇰🐘 Specific Tips for Sri Lanka 🐘🇱🇰

🛺 PickMe: Download the PickMe app before you go to Sri Lanka. It’s like Uber, and you can use it for cars, scooters and tuk tuks. Definitely the easiest way to get around!

✈️ Airport: Most international flights land at Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), which is actually closer to Negombo than Colombo itself. I recommend booking your first night in Negombo, it also has some lovely beaches!

💶 Local Currency: The currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are accepted at major hotels and businesses, but most homestays and small shops are cash only. Get a WISE card to make things easier and cheaper.

📳 SIM Card: I picked up a local SIM with 50GB at the airport and it worked great. If you’d prefer to sort it in advance, try an eSIM from Airalo.

🚂 Train Tickets & Timetables: Trains are a beautiful way to travel. Check schedules and book tickets on the Sri Lanka Railways site. Tickets open 30 days in advance, or you can always get unreserved tickets on the day.

🚌 Buses: Buses are super easy, just show up and ask someone for help if needed. You pay in cash once you’re on board. Google Maps isn’t always reliable for times or routes, so asking locals is your best bet.

🚂 🚌 Bus, Train & Ferry Tickets: You can also book ahead online with 12Go. It’s pricier, but helpful for busy routes like the Kandy → Ella train if you want a reserved seat.

🛂 Visas: And finally, check whether you need a visa for Sri Lanka before you travel!
