Russia
Russia is a land of dramatic beauty, where colourful onion domes rise above cobbled squares and gilded cathedrals glow against winter skies. From the fairytale silhouettes of Saint Basil’s Cathedral to the glittering canals and palaces of Saint Petersburg, the country feels steeped in romance, poetry and imperial nostalgia.

Transport...
Getting to and from Russia is more complicated than it once was, with many Western airlines suspending direct routes and overland borders shifting depending on current political tensions. Travellers often connect via countries such as Turkey, Serbia or the Gulf states, or enter overland through parts of the Caucasus or Central Asia. Domestic travel within Russia is well connected despite its vast scale, with efficient (and comfortable!) long-distance trains, affordable internal flights and an extensive bus network linking everything from grand imperial cities to remote Siberian outposts.
Russia is home to one of the most famous rail journeys in the world: the iconic Trans-Siberian Railway, where days unfold across endless birch forests, frozen lakes and vast steppe landscapes. I was lucky to be able to experience this amazing journey during my first visit to Russia in 2010.
When to Visit Russia
Russia is a huge country so the climate varies significantly. Much of the country has a continental climate, with extremely cold winters and scorching hot summers. The south is more mild than the north, but still sees huge variations in temperature.
Where to Stay...
Many Western booking agents such as booking.com and hostelworld have pulled out of Russia due to political tensions. If you’re travelling to Russia, it’s probably best to book via individual hotel websites or find a Russian booking agent.
How to Get a Visa for Russia
IMPORTANT: Due to prolonged tensions with the West, it’s currently not advisable for many nationalities to visit Russia. I recommend checking the official government advice from your own country of citizenship. Note that travelling against government advice can sometimes void travel insurance, so make sure to research thoroughly. I’ve travelled extensively in Russia, however my last trip there was in 2018.
