Tucked right inside the COEX Mall in Seoul’s upscale Gangnam district, Starfield Library (also known as Byeolmadang Library) is totally open to the public, and completely free to enter. Despite the buzz and the foot traffic, the space somehow keeps a calm, reverent vibe. It’s not whisper-silent, but it’s definitely a peaceful place.

What Is Starfield Library?
Opened in 2017, Starfield Library (별마당 도서관) isn’t your typical library.
It’s a massive, open public space spanning two floors inside COEX Mall, with over 50,000 books, hundreds of magazines, cosy reading nooks, and jaw-dropping 13-meter-tall bookshelves that stretch toward the sky.
Even if you don’t read a single page, just standing under the soaring shelves and soaking in the atmosphere is an experience in itself. It’s no wonder Starfield Library often pops up on lists of the best libraries in the world.
When Was Starfield Library in Seoul Built?
The COEX Mall, the massive shopping and entertainment complex where Starfield Library is located, first opened its doors in 2000, after construction began in 1997. (Think of it as South Korea’s answer to the Millennium Dome: a bold, 21st century project!)
The Starfield Library itself is a much more recent addition, officially opening in 2017 as part of a major renovation to transform COEX into a true cultural destination, not just a shopping mall.

How to Get to Starfield Library
Location:
Starfield Library is located inside COEX Mall in the Gangnam district, south of the Han River. The easiest way to get there is to take the subway and get off at one of the following stops:
Nearest Subway Stations:
- Bongeunsa Station (Line 9): Exit 7 → About 5 minutes walk
- Samseong Station (Line 2): Exit 5 or 6 → Follow the signs into COEX Mall
