Gyeongbokgung Palace - How to Spend 3 Days in Seoul - South Korea - Epic Itinerary - Call of the World

Step back in time at Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. Dress up in a traditional-style hanbok, explore and feel like Korean royalty. Read on for how to visit Gyeongbokgung Palace, and step into South Korea’s royal past!

Visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace is like stepping straight into the pages of South Korea’s royal history. Originally built in 1395, this magnificent complex once served as the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty, and with over 7,000 rooms, it’s as grand as you might imagine. Over the centuries, Gyeongbokgung has been destroyed, rebuilt and even abandoned for nearly 200 years, yet today it stands proudly as one of Seoul’s most treasured landmarks.

And one of the most magical aspects of visiting? You can rent a traditional Hanbok (old-style Korean outfit) and explore the palace grounds in full style. And don’t worry, visitors are actively encouraged, no matter what their background, to don this historic Korean outfit. When you’re surrounded by people in vibrant, traditional clothing, it truly feels like you’ve travelled back in time. Plus, the rest of the crowds around you actually become part of the attraction!

How long should I spend at Gyeongbokgung Palace?

Given the size of the palace complex, I recommend allowing at least 2–3 hours for your visit minimum, but history lovers could easily spend half a day soaking it all in, especially if you’re wearing a Hanbok and taking photos. If you’re visiting during Seoul’s hot and humid summer, be sure to pace yourself, stay hydrated, and take plenty of shade breaks.
